CHANGING PACE, AND CHANGING PRIORITIES.
A little note from me about some changes coming to Editor at Large, and Noelle Weigel Style.
I am a highly regular creature, by nature.
I like rhythms, I like consistency, I like accountability and order. As I’m sure you have noticed, I am extremely regular with my content and business offering - always delivering content reliably at times & days you can count on. This is intentional - a “proof of concept” of sorts, that I & my work are worth your time and money without the backing of a legacy editorial. I don’t take your support for granted. I also like to challenge myself - I am forever feeling like I am “not doing enough”, and therefore push myself harder. The weekly Saturday postings have been a fantastic challenge, and I have enjoyed carving out the time to produce better and better pieces on a weekly basis. However LIFE, by definition, changes. It’s consistency is in its inconsistency; challenging us to bend and evolve with its turning tides. There have been times in my life where I’ve had to recalculate my priorities, and in a way, I am at one of those crossroads again. Life has happened very fast over the last few weeks & months, and I have struggled to find my footing - every time I thought I recalibrated enough, something has happened to make me reconsider again.
I LOVE MY WORK, particularly my writing here on Editor at Large. It is one of the things I am fighting the hardest to hold onto, and continue. For me, the future of my work lies in my ability to share my mind, my informed perspective on the meaning and purpose of culture and design, and my uniquely positive outlook on the world and our place in it. But, as one of the most successful and productive women I know once said “When you're doing too much, you are doing nothing well.” Harsh, but deeply true words.
All of this to say, I am taking a sabbatical from all of my platforms for the next few weeks. I have some really beautiful content and pieces drafted or planned that I will be postponing sharing for a little while. Everything will go quiet. I need this, my family needs this, and I think now is a good time for some intentional quieting, just generally in our world. We need to relish peace, and remember the virtues of calm. Enough of the noise. Honestly, I do wonder if my voice is needed right now in the cultural marketplace of opinion, and it might be, but as I tell my sons “save your breath for when you have something to say”; and my instinct is that we are all tired of talking and opinions. We need space to think, and consider; and make sense of the times we live in. I intend to afford my readers this same curtesy.
I have spoken before on how I feel we have an unhealthy relationship with busy work in our society today - how we don’t value taking longer to produce something better, or investing your full effort in something yet to be realized without any immediate output. In a way, I talk about it because I am uniquely susceptible to it. Give me a goal post or a finish line, and I’ll murder it - no matter if it's unreasonable or the cost is too high. However, my saving grace is that I also can not help but view my work and life through the lens of perspective. So much of what I have written here on Editor at Large I am so proud of - but I want to write more, and even better pieces. I know they’re there, percolating in my brain, waiting to be written down. However, producing even better work takes time and effort, things I will not take out of my own wellbeing and that of my family - and “wellbeing” is where good work comes from.
When I come back to writing & posting, I will be changing my pace a bit. I will be posting at a less regular pace than before, allowing more time to produce better & better pieces - and allow for life with young children in between. I will return in a few weeks with several pieces focusing on growth and abundance, as well as a delicious deep dive into Autumn and the cultural inspiration for so much of that rich time of year. The Color Series will resume as well - a series I am so proud of, and I enjoy researching and producing a comprehensive exploration of each color over the course of human history. If you have any requests or suggestions for future content please leave a note below! As always, thank you for being here. Please consider signing up for one of my subscriptions - it means the world to me and ensures that I am able to continue to produce this content and hopefully continue to grow what I can offer.
See you all in a few weeks.
